Having spent much of the last 10 years in many parts of East Africa, Mikel saw an opportunity to explore the potential of partnering together cycling communities across continents to create and nurture real opportunities for riders in Africa. And so was born Project Amani: An international cycling team that brings together initiatives aimed at enhancing inclusivity in cycling and creating opportunities for riders based in Africa.

Concept: The Hidden Athlete Project
In 2018, listeners of The Hidden Athlete Podcast came together to launch The Hidden Athlete Project. The concept was initially designed to simply support cycling talent based in one of the poorest regions on earth with equipment and apparel. This would enable the riders to compete at top tier National events again. Check out this clip for some early insight into the project.

The evolution of the project happen quickly. A cash donor platform was launched so cycling fans the world over could support members to attend races outside Uganda in countries like Kenya & Rwanda.
